Ludvig Pontoppidan Danish Cabinetmaker Wool Sofa, circa 1940

$9,800.00

Exceptional Danish sofa handcrafted by master cabinetmaker Ludvig Pontoppidan, Denmark, circa 1940. A superb example of the cabinetmaker tradition that defined the finest early Danish Modern furniture, the sofa is constructed with a substantial solid-wood frame and traditional eight-way hand-tied copper springs, horsehair, and cotton padding. The gently curved back and arms are accented with hand-tufted detailing and raised on tapered wood legs. Newly upholstered in Raf Simons Balder a rich blue/green woven wool fabric.
Ludvig Pontoppidan was among Copenhagen’s respected master cabinetmakers during the golden age of Danish furniture, when cabinetmakers worked in small-scale workshops producing exceptionally crafted pieces for a discerning clientele. Furniture from this period represents a level of traditional construction and hand craftsmanship rarely found in later production pieces.
The sofa has been completely restored by our in-house craftspeople while preserving its traditional construction and is in excellent condition with minor signs of age-appropriate use.
