Atlantic Avenue, Rockport
Anthony Thieme
Oil on canvas
Impressionist oil painting depicting a tranquil Atlantic Avenue in Rockport Cape Ann, lined with white clapboard homes beneath towering trees. A beautiful natural light source filters through the canopy, piercing the trees and casting luminous highlights across the façades, fencing, and roadway. Executed with expressive brushwork and rich atmospheric color, the painting captures the warmth and charm of coastal New England. Signed lower right and presented in a carved giltwood frame.
Anthony Thieme (1888–1954) was a Dutch-born American painter celebrated for his atmospheric New England coastal scenes, particularly views of Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts. Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, he immigrated to the United States in the early 20th century and became closely associated with the Cape Ann art colony. His work is admired for its expressive brushwork, luminous handling of light, and impressionistic interpretations of maritime and village life.
Thieme’s paintings frequently feature dramatic natural light effects, with sunlight filtering through trees or reflecting across water, qualities especially evident in this Rockport composition. Balancing strong architectural structure with loose painterly execution, the scene conveys both warmth and movement, exemplifying Thieme’s distinctive contribution to American Impressionism.
